House Foreign Affairs Committee holds hearing on confronting Haiti’s Terrorist Gangs: The Gang Suppression Force and the Path Ahead (VIDEO / LIVE)

Awash in gang violence, scarred by past foreign interventions and long paralysed politically, Haiti now stands at a crossroads between a return to order and tipping into total chaos, the Security Council heard today, as a range of senior United Nations officials provided their latest updates.

When the Trump administration's top envoy to the United Nations visited Haiti earlier this month, the trip went largely unnoticed until Ambassador Mike Waltz posted about it on social media. In his posts, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. issued a warning to Haiti's deadly gangs, praised the new U.S.-created, United Nations-authorized Gang Suppression Force and stressed that "the entire international community" was united to help the Caribbean nation reclaim territory from armed gangs and restore stability.

The U.S. envoy to the United Nations said Monday that the U.S. government soon will move to stop violent gangs in Haiti from making money off social media posts. Gang leaders in the troubled Caribbean country are prolific users of social media and have celebrated killings, issued threats and posted musings on various sites. Younger gang members also post music videos and wave cash they've earned in an effort to recruit children in the impoverished nation.
