STATEMENT from the Caribbean Community | Ongoing Turmoil in the Haitian Executive

Date:

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) notes with great concern the internal turmoil taking place at the highest levels of the Haitian state at this delicate point in time when stability and level-headedness in decision-making, and prioritization of the well-being of the Haitian people, are urgently required of members of the Haitian executive.

In accordance with the provisions of the founding decree of the Transitional Presidential Council, and of the 3 April 2024 Political Accord, the mandate of the Transitional Presidential Council will end shortly on 7 February 2026.

The current impasse within the Haitian Transitional Presidential Council, following the inconclusive efforts of some members to dismiss the Prime Minister, renders more complex an already fraught governance transition process. Meanwhile, the people of Haiti continue to suffer unimaginable violence and deprivation. This is unacceptable. It is crucial that stakeholders put aside differences to reach consensus. The CARICOM Eminent Persons Group remains at the disposal of all stakeholders to facilitate agreement from the multiplicity of proposals which currently exist.

CARICOM’s foremost hope is for a halt to current fragmentation which works only for the benefit of the gangs, and for the restoration of lasting political stability, security and peace in Haiti, so that elections can be held, and attention re-focused on economic growth and sustainable development for the benefit of all Haitians.

CARICOM calls on all Haitian stakeholders to put the future of their people and country above all else, and to act responsibly, and with urgency and patriotism.

Ecuadorian lawyer admits to drafting Haiti warrant to arrest Moïse ahead of killing

The lawyer, José Antonio Corrales, testified that he drafted several documents central to the plot, including the arrest warrant, which he had hoped to have signed by a Haitian Superior Court justice, Windelle Coq Thélot. His clients at the security firm had designated the judge as the heir apparent to Moïse after abandoning a South Florida pastor in his months-long quest for the presidency.

US Supreme Court seems to side with Trump actions to strip legal status for Haitians, Syrians

The U.S. Supreme Court appeared poised Wednesday to uphold the Trump administration’s efforts to end temporary legal protections for 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians.  The decision could also affect several other lawsuits related to what is known as Temporary Protected Status that are pending in lower courts. The suits challenge the Trump administration’s procedures to terminate country protections, which have sharply raised deportation risks for more than 1 million immigrants.

‘We have to work together.’ Canada’s U.N. envoy visits Haiti, pledges continued support

In briefings with Canadian, Haitian and U.N. officials, Lametti heard a familiar refrain on the current reality: incremental gains by security forces alongside continued territorial expansion by gangs; cautious optimism about the new international security response, but questions about whether the new Gang Suppression Force will get the support it needs from both a U.N. Trust Fund, to which Canada has already contributed millions, and a newly established U.N. Support Office. In total, 15 U.N. member nations have pledged support amounting to $213.5 million to the Trust Fund, with $174.1 million in cash already received. The bulk of the money, however, had been pledged to support the Kenya-led Multinational Support mission, with the majority of the $58.5 million disbursed used for personnel entitlements and medical and casualty evacuations.
